I actually think the pacing works quite well, and it's a little hilarious that Harvey has essentially blind-sided himself with Mike and doesn't even really realize it. But that makes sense for Harvey, because as we've seen, he doesn't really give away love easily. So when you win it from him, you've crested a mountain. Mike reaching in and doing it without Harvey's say so would confuse and frustrate Harvey.
